Find your logo file and check three things. The extension: if it’s .ai, .eps or .svg, the logo itself is fine, the blur came from somewhere else in the artwork chain (skip to the print-file section). If it’s .jpg or .png, continue. The pixel size: right-click → Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac). Divide the pixel width by 300, that’s your maximum clean print width in inches. A 500px logo holds under 2 inches; fine on a business card, mush on a poster. The zoom test: open the file and zoom to 400%. What you see at 400% on screen is roughly what large-format print will show everyone. Soft edges and blocky curves at zoom mean the file physically lacks the detail print needs, no setting on the printer changes that.

Read the bottom rows again: virtually no logo image anyone actually has holds 7,000 clean pixels. That’s why large-format is where blur ambushes businesses that “never had a problem before”, the business cards were within the file’s budget; the van never was. The sneaky source nobody suspects: screenshots

A surprising share of blurry-print cases trace to one habit: somewhere along the way, someone screenshotted the logo, off the website, out of a PDF, from an old design proof, and that screenshot became “the logo file” that got passed around for years. Screenshots capture your screen’s resolution, not the artwork’s: typically a few hundred soft-edged pixels wrapped in a white box, then re-compressed by email and WhatsApp on every journey. Why “just sharpen it” doesn’t work

It’s the first thing everyone tries, so let’s save you the evening: sharpening filters increase edge contrast; they cannot create edge detail that was never captured. Resolution mechanics aside, AI upscalers do better on photographs, inventing plausible skin and grass, but logos are exactly where invention fails: letterforms have correct shapes, and “plausible” isn’t correct. The result is typically smooth-but-wrong: melted corners, wavering strokes, an O that isn’t quite round. For photography, upscaling is a tool; for a logo, it’s a detour that still ends at the redraw.

Which of your existing files prints best, meanwhile

A PDF is your best hope: zoom to 1000%, if edges stay perfectly crisp, that PDF carries vector artwork inside it and may be printable as-is (send it, tell the printer, they’ll check). A PNG beats a JPG of the same size: no compression halos, and transparency spares you the white box. A JPG is last resort, printed no larger than its pixel budget allows (the ÷300 rule above). What to say to the printer (copy this)

Two sentences keep the job moving and the relationship honest: “Our logo file is currently low-resolution, please don’t print it larger than [your ÷300 number] without checking with me. Proper vector files are being made and I’ll send AI/EPS/PDF versions by [date].” Printers deal with this daily; what frustrates them is not the file, it’s discovering it after the proofs. Flag it upfront and most will either wait the day for your £39 redraw or scale the layout so the logo stays within its budget.
