Retainers suit a specific situation: you have work every month, but not enough of it to employ somebody, and quoting each small job separately wastes more time than the job takes. Paying a set fee removes the admin and puts you at the front of the queue rather than behind whoever booked first.
There are four tiers below. They differ in what the hours are spent on, not in how the arrangement works. All of them are a fixed monthly fee, a named person, and a thirty day notice period. If you are unsure which fits, the answer is usually whichever describes most of what you asked for last quarter.

Six things are true of every tier. The tier only changes what the hours are spent on.

The same person every month, who learns your business rather than reading the brief again each time.
Priority queue
Retainer work goes ahead of one-off projects, which is most of what you are actually buying.
Fixed monthly fee
Agreed in advance. No per-job quoting, and no invoice that arrives larger than you expected.
Monthly written review
What was done, what it moved, what is next, set out in writing. Tier changes get decided here.
Rollover within the month
A quiet fortnight is not wasted. Hours roll inside the month, though they do not bank up indefinitely.
No long contract
Thirty days notice, cancel whenever. The retainer has to keep earning its place, which is the right pressure for us to be under.

Every item here has its own page and its own price, and you are welcome to buy them that way. What this buys is one team doing the work in the order it needs to happen.
The logo is designed already knowing where it has to live. Nothing gets redrawn later because the files turned out to be the wrong format for the printer.
Real designers work from the same brief, so nothing is made twice. No briefing four suppliers from the same PDF and hoping the results end up looking related.

What was delivered and what it moved. If you are consistently under-using the tier we will say so and move you down.

The wrong package is worse for both of us, so the second column is as honest as the first.
Buy something else if
- You have one project rather than ongoing work. Buy the project; a retainer would cost you more for the same output.
- You want hosting and site management covered. That is a separate service, because a retainer buys work rather than a server.
- You want to bank unused hours across months. They roll inside the month and no further, deliberately.
- You need a guaranteed response out of hours. Priority means ahead of other clients in working hours, not a 24 hour rota.
